Next up on the East Project Podcast series are a couple of DJ/producers that hail from over the pond... Detroit, America to be precise! Doug English and Ross Regs have given us one of the most downright filthy mixes we've heard in quite some time... Expect nothing but the best beats and we love it!!
Detroit has a long, rich musical history... Why do you think
that is and how does it feel to be living there and a part of it? What is the scene like now in Detroit?
Doug - In the past, Detroit musicians/artists have each had
their own unique flavor and dedication to their craft. Growing up in this area,
we’ve had that rich and diverse selection of music just a radio switch away.
When I was a younger, I would stay up late to listen to the Ghettotech guys
like DJ Godfather and DJ Assault. Or I could flip the channel over to some
baby-making RnB depending on the mood. Also, being here inspires me to keep
moving forward, the fact that so much has come from this city.. and i’m not
talking about just music.
Reg - Just like Doug said, artists here have really always
done things their own way, finding whats next, stepping completely outside the
box. Detroit continues to stimulate my creativity and I’m extremely thankful to
have grown up here in that regard.
How do you work on your productions? Do you prefer working together in the studio
or do you actually do your own thing in front of your own desks and exchange
your production ideas online instead?
D & R - We both use Ableton and we’re also roommates so
collaborating is easy. We usually finish the collabs when we are both in the
studio, but we’ll each take turns cranking on it.
Which has been your favourite production?
D - My favorite track, and I’ve played this just about every
set since it was released, is ’No One Knows’ by KANT, Teenage Mutants. But as
for my personal stuff, I’m really digging this remix I did for FromDropTillDawn
and Yawash that’s forthcoming on House Of Hustle, titled 'Get With It’. It
slaps.
R - It’s so hard to choose a favorite but, I gotta say Vitor
Munhoz’s remix of Celebrate by Gabriel Boni & Simple Jack has been a big
track for me in the past year or so. Looking at our own productions, I really
liked mine and Doug’s collab titled ‘Workout Sleaze’
When you are on the same line-up, do you DJ together (B2B)
or separately?
D & R - It depends on whether
we are booked for solo sets or not. If we have solo sets that are following
each other, we’ll usually merge our sets together.. it gets out of hand sometimes.
You have both DJ'd alongside a variety of big artists, who
has been your favourite?
D - So hard to pick a favorite, but Option4 takes first
place.. homie’s a madman behind the decks and his pants game is on point. I
gotta mention Kill Frenzy though, Watched him on New Years Eve and spent all
three hours trying to pick up the tricks he was laying down.
R - We played direct support for Soul Clap last September
and Charlie was unable to make it to the show. Eli played an extended set that
was quite different from what you would normally hear in a Soul Clap set. It
was great to see such versatility and various flavors come out. Option4 really
did it for me as well. He brings an amazing presence and energy to the floor,
its almost impossible not to groove.
Finally, what should we be looking our for in the
future? Are there plans for world
domination?
D - For the future, I’m releasing remixes on Sleazy G, House
of Hustle as well as an EP on Grooverdose Records out of Brazil. I’ve been
anxiously waiting for these.
R - I have my solo
debut track titled ‘Slappin’ which will be out soon on Sleazy G's Miami G 2015
compilation, plus various collabs in the works with Doug, Anas A., and Weto to
name few.
