East Project Podcast... Marks & Oz!
For the 19th episode of the East Project Podcast, we have another belting mix, and this time it comes to you all the way from Australia thanks to the excellent Marks & OZ!

How did you guys first hook up and why does the partnership work so well?

How did you guys first hook up and why does the partnership work so well?
Marks: We’ve been best mates since we were 10 and grew up
together in Brisbane, Australia. Having known each other for so long is
probably the reason we work so well together, most of the time we know what the
other is thinking without anything being said.
OZ: Generally our workflow is great and our ideas correlate
a lot of the time, and we both try to keep completely open to trying what
either of us suggest individually as well.
M: I guess I would say I’m more experienced in the DJing
side of things, I self taught myself only about 5 years ago on the set up at a
bar I was working at when I lived in Sydney.
After we moved to Melbourne for work in 2013 we started having nights
where I taught Brent how to mix and we’d drink and mix for hours.
OZ: I used to muck around with FL when I was younger so once
we really started getting into music I started to have a play with that again,
It just kinda took off from there. Eventually we had a small studio set up and
would spend most of our day’s off drinking and making beats.
OZ: It’s really starting to pick up! Australia is getting
some awesome international artists coming over and it’s exposing audiences to
that G House sound. A lot of promoters are bringing all the big boys out like
Amine Edge & DANCE, Sharam Jey and we recently played support for Shiba San
in Sydney. The crowd went mental for him and the whole room knew all his tracks.
I think the blend of hip hop influence and deep house roots are really
resonating with Aussie auiences.
M: There are a few Aussie G House artists we’re digging at the moment. The Melbourne based ‘Jump To This’ crew are doing big things for the scene down here. Artist’s like Torren Foot, Hey Sam, Jez & Wildfire all have massive releases with a big G House sound. Another artist to look out for is Latour from the Gold Coast, he’s already got releases on House of Hustle and has collaborated with some pretty big artists.
OZ: I’m currently in Korea for work but I’m due home in a
few weeks, so I’m excited about getting back and playing more shows back home.
We have a lot of stuff on the go production-wise so excited to keep working and
getting our tracks out there.
M: I’m heading back to Brisbane for a few months and have a
few shows already booked so I’m looking forward to bringing our sound back
home. Also we’re really working on moving our sound in an interesting
direction, much more house based so I’m pretty excited about where we can take
it.
Can you tell us what you love and hate most about each
other, one thing each?
M: Love – How Brent completely dedicates himself to
something once he’s figured out he enjoys it.
Hate – Drunken arguments, cos neither of us ever wins!
OZ: Love – That nothing is ever a massive issue
Hate – When Sam rocks backward on my expensive wooden chairs
during a session!

Label Spotlight... Nasty Funk!
We have always kept a look out for new record labels and when NastyFunk first dropped into our consciousness 3 years ago, we were hooked... They push a real mix of underground house, tech-house, deep house and nu-disco that always has that "nasty funk" and we are glad they are around!

You have reached 40 releases since November 2011. How would you sum-up the label's first 3 years in the music world?
What was your inspiration behind the label?
For me, DJing is about picking the right record, and I think
running a label is kind of an extension to that. The day that I decided to
start the imprint was at a Crosstown Rebels party in 2010 in Miami. A garden
party with maybe 150 people, and a lineup of Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones, Art
Department, Soul Clap, Subb-An, Lee Foss, Solomun +++. That was an inspiration
without doubt.
We were always trying to catch the ears of the big players in
the scene, and even now, every time we hook in someone new, it’s exciting.
Things like being in Jamie Jones’ chart at Christmas, or days spent signing
legends like Jef K or Alex Arnout to the label, to hearing Amine Edge spinning
the imprint on BBC Radio 1, it’s all next level for us.
Tell us about your plans for 2015 and what tracks and
artists should we be looking out for?
This year is gonna be a fantastic one for music; there’s so
much quality in my promo box at the moment and I’m definitely falling in love
with the way people are smashing up genres at the moment. To be honest, I'm
really excited about all of our artists for the coming year, but if I could
pick anyone I’d say my boy, Elijah Collins, 2015 is going to be a very good
year for him. Outside of NFR, I’d say I’m really feeling pretty much anything
Cera Alba does right now.
For any aspiring producers out there looking to send demos in… Would you have any advice for them?
Whilst we probably have a certain style, we are always
looking for new sounds. A lot of people make the mistake of sending in demos
that are similar to tracks we’ve released in the past… The perfect demo; if you
can make us a track that sounds like something we’d release in the future, then
that would be perfect, ha! The most important advice to any producer though –
never give up.
So many come to mind, a lot of underground staples, and some
modern classics. My first thought would be Peace Division - Blacklight Sleaze
for it’s nastiness… But then I think PBR Streetgang – Downstroke would win for
it's pure, unadulterated funkiness. Anyone got a time machine?

"Label Spotlight" featuring Daylight Robbery Records
We caught up with the label boss of the excellent London based Daylight Robbery Records!
Tell us where the idea and concept for the label come from?
Well the label was basically a result of my flat being
burgled one day whilst I was at work. Came home to find the front door kicked
in, all my sound equipment and various other items gone. I hadn't backed up for
a while, didn't have insurance and had lost practically everything. Needed a
silver-lining to the shitty situation and decided it was time to start a label,
the name Daylight Robbery seemed an appropriate choice!
You are nearly a year old, how has the first year gone so
far?
Much better than I could have hoped to be honest! We were
really lucky early doors to get original tracks from some name producers that
we admired and who trusted to us to release a Free EP to help build the profile
of the label. We had Trav + Volta, Marco Darko, Jamie Antonelli, Ashworth,
Cutting Agents and myself releasing on a free EP (which is still available).
Still not exactly sure how I managed to convince them, but
the EP did really well and helped get us noticed. Then our first release on
Beatport was featured by Mixmag on their website and Soundcloud, and since then
we've just tried to grow with each release. Our current EP is our most
successful yet; it's at no.7 on Beatport at time of writing - which is
something I never really thought that we would achieve.
In what ways do you think Daylight Robbery stands out from the other labels out there?
That's a hard question, there are so many good labels out
there doing their thing. To be honest, I'm just trying to put out releases that
I think are great and that I want to share with people. Some releases will be
more disco, or more techy, or more housey - but I just try and get a lot of
artists that I admire all under our roof and releasing EPs that I want to hear.
That's kind of the philosophy, we just want to be known for putting out
consistently good house music.
If you could have signed one track to the label, past or
present, what would that track be?
There's a couple that stick in my mind! From last year it
would be 'Newbie Nerdz & Going Deeper - Your World', massive massive tune
and I'm big fan of Newbie Nerdz. This year it would have to be 'Mark Wells
& Marco Darko - Who's Ya Daddy'. This track is 'the one that got away' for
me - we were planning to release it on another Free EP, but Nervous NYC heard
it and unsurprisingly swooped in and offered a full release - definitely my
tune of the year so far this one!
What are you really excited about with regards to the future for Daylight Robbery?
Many things, got some really exciting releases in the
pipeline that I can't wait to share with people, from big name artists &
upcoming ones. But at the moment I'm mostly excited about building on our debut
label party which saw 150people meet in a secret location in Brixton for what
turned out to be an amazing party.
We're now in talks for our next party which will be us
moving to a big venue with the hope of doing regular nights in London. We want
to be running a consistent successful Daylight Robbery club night in London,
and then we plan to take that on the road as well. Oh and maybe another Free EP
soon too ;)
Last Question... What is your music guilty pleasure?
Easy one this... Spandau Ballet - Gold! My old producer name
was Spangled Ballet, and if I had to sing any song at karaoke...

Tell us what you are up to at the moment?
Tell us what you are up to at the moment?
I 've been having a lot of work, I'm in the last year of
college, Public Relations, but every day I'm in my studio working on some tracks
and EPs. I'm focusing on Brazilian labels.
Brazil seems to be full of a lot of talented producers, why
would you say that is and who for you is setting the standard?
Brazil has been gaining more prominence within the
electronic music mainly within the G-House but I think Tech House will gain
more strength, especially with names like Volkoder, Gabe, Touchtalk, Velkro.
If you had to pick a dream remixer for your track, who would
it be and why?
German Brigante, Dashdot, Gabe... I think any of these.

What has been your stand out moment so far in your music
career?
I believe it was when Amine Edge sent me a message praising
me and saying he has a lot of respect for me, I did not expect it so soon :)
Finally, tell us how you got involved with 8 beat management?
After two years working alone, I received many proposals,
the most important for me was the 8beats by connections I have with the people
there, is an agency that supports its artists and makes them grow.
