East Project Episode 8 Feat. GORKIZ + interview!

For the 8th episode of the East Project Podcast and this article, we welcome along label friend Gorkiz.  His latest release, the "Everybody  EP", is out on Clap7, a new Brazilian label run by Dakar Carvalho, that is also scheduled to give East Project's very own Rough Cut, their first release!!

Diego, aka Gorkiz / Divine X, is one of the producers of sorority that has been highlighted in Brazil and onto the world stage, with releases on labels such as: Datagroove Music, Wasabi Recordings, Komitee Recordings Ibiza, Crossworld Records and Wired.  Gorkiz has a solid understanding of diversity and a great taste in music, readily amplified by his open mind and soul.  He has also received great support from DJs and producers such as Richie Hawtin, Dalbe, Anthony Nero, Deltano Ds, Marvin, to name a few...

We caught up with Gorkiz to ask him a few questions before he put this mix together for us...  Enjoy!!

Where are you from and what are you up to?

I am from Sorocaba, an important city of São Paulo State.  I started getting into music at the age of 12 and today I am 25 years old.  At the moment I DJ professionally and I am interested in increasing my exposure in Europe via Eletronic Music.

What are your influences and does coming from Brazil impact on your sound?

My influences are people like: Betoko, Maxxi Soundsystem, DashDot and my Brazilian DJs are: Vintage Culture, Sonic Future, Funky Fat.  All very Good!!  My fans give me great feedback
in Brazil, with full nightclubs, so I have now received invitations to perform around Europe.

Can you tell us your highlight moment for 2013?

My highlight moment in 2013 was joining Chemical Surf to produce a track together and that track is due for release in March 2014 via Kittball Records, based in Germany.  It was a very nice moment.

How would you describe your sound to anyone that has not heard of you?

My sound is progressive, with nice melodies and always high bass.

What are your plans for 2014?

Promote my sound around Brazil and Europe.

What's HOT in March!

With this regular feature, we're going to recommend the nights that we think are going to be HOT over the next month.  Where are you going to hear wall to wall bangers?  Which events and DJs should be troubling your diaries??  And where are you next going to lose your marbles???

First up, there's a huge event taking place at BUILDING 6 on Saturday 1st March...  Formally known as Matter and run by the team from Fabric before becoming Proud 2 (which never really took off), this venue at the O2 in Greenwich is now being run in-house with help from the LWE boys.  Trying to utilise the 3000 capacity venue to its maximum effect, for this event, they have plumped for a couple of huge G-House boys and an American house legend:

Sat 1st March / 21:00-06:00
Room 1:
Amine Edge & DANCE, Todd Terry, Sidney Charles, Jesse Perez, Stuff, Igluu
Room 2 hosted by Pinnacle:
Saytek (live), Cera Alba, Tough Love, Syncretic, Bill Dove

No matter what your opinions are on the venue, with this party already being on their final allocation of pre-sale tickets, this is an event that you wish you will have been at!!

If you want to go for a more traditional straight up tech and house sound, then maybe your first port of call in March should be at Oval Space, to hear the mighty Dennis Ferrer?!  Support on the night comes from DJ Qu, Rick Wade and the amazing Jozif!!

Sat 1st March / 22:00-06:00
Dennis Ferrer, DJ Qu, Rick Wade, Jozif

On the 8th March, if you don't mind going back to the same venue as the week before, Trouble Vision & Tief are proud to announce that Feel My Bicep will return to London's Oval Space to present the London leg of Todd Terje's long awaited album debut tour and debut London live show.

Not only that, he will be supported by the excellent Bicep and Maurice Fulton, so you can definitely get your disco and house shoes on!!

Sat 8th March / 22:00-06:00
Todd Terje, Bicep, Maurice Fulton & Support

If Garage used to be or still is your vibe and you happen to be in the Brixton area on Friday 14th March, then we can recommend no better than heading to Plan B!!  All 3 of us at East Project having grown up listening to UKG, have a soft spot for the genre and it has definitely been making a very welcome come back of late...

Taking the reins for this 4th Total Garage event, you get Oxide & Neutrino playing alongside the one and only Matt Jam Lamont and Sunship.  They promise to put Plan B's Funktion 1 sound system to the test!!

Fri 14th March / 22:00-05:00
Oxide & Neutrione, Matt Jam Lamont & Sunship

A week later, on Friday 21st March, is you're in North West London, you would do well in getting yourself down to Love&Liquor!  This little soiree have got the excellent Sharam Jey from Germany to play his own brand of house, with a supporting set from Vanilla Ace...  These boys have featured heavily on The Project's office stereo!!

Fri 21st March / 21:00-03:00

On Saturday 22nd March, all roads lead to XOYO in Shoreditch.  You could go to this venue pretty much any weekend of the year and be guaranteed to hear quality music!!

Starting back in January 2014, XOYO launched their residency series.  They have picked 4 huge talents, who will reside at their venue for 12 weeks running and play alongside a whole host of guest DJs!  Their first resident is the one and only EATS EVERYTHING and on the 22nd he is joined by one amazing line-up!!

Sat 22nd March / 20:00-04:00
East Everything b2b Heidi, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Gerd

Finally for the end of March, we would recommend heading to Vauxhall and the superb Lightbox & Protocol for an event headlined by Newbie Nerdz (Gruuv)...  Anyone who has been to the Lightbox will tell you how great the room and visuals are in there, making for an amazing dancefloor experience.

Fri 28th March / 22:00-06:00
Newbie Nerdz, Jack D & Jake Walpole, Kelvin McKenzie, Jafebe

ENJOY!!

INFLUENCES... The Magician!

Hailing from Belgium.  Born Stephen Fasano.  And formally part of Aeroplane (another great influence of mine)...  Let me introduce to you The Magician!

"His background is shrouded in mystery, his powers are supernatural and his reputation is whispered about among men. He goes by different names, but folks just call him The Magician."  So his biography tells us...  If you have not heard of this guy, then where have you been?

There is no need to look any further than his Soundcloud page to understand why he is rated so highly, not only by myself...

Posting up Magic "mix" Tapes since 2011 (he has done 39 so far), each time he tries to bring something just a little bit different to the table than his previous mix.  His sound is firmly based in the 4/4 world but the tempo often changes.  He is equally able to play you a more uplifting beat that really gets your feet moving, to slowing it right down with more funky/groovy joints.

Whether it's including flashes of old school sounding pianos or more modern tech stabs, along with a regular use of vocal tracks, Magic Tapes are not afraid to look into the past for their influence, in order to help shape the future!

One of his most recent mixes (and a personal favourite of mine) - MAGIC TAPE 38 - has been listened to over 128,000 times...

And if you needed any more proof, check these out...  The figures don't lie!

Over 100,000 followers on Facebook
Over 93,000 followers on Soundcloud
Over 18,500 followers on Twitter
& almost 5000 followers on Instagram

Not only is he content with providing such fluid, yet diverse and enjoyable mixes, the guy can also produce a decent tune when he wants to!!  Generally across the board, his style ranges from house to disco/nudisco.

Whether it is on remix duties (such as his remix of Clean Bandit at the top of this post) or weather it's his own original material, The Magician is guaranteed to leave you spell bound (sorry, it had to be done!).

Not only that, when he's feeling generous, he likes to give his music away for FREE (who doesn't like a free tune?!):

Whether you agree or not, in my world and certainly over the past few years, this guy has been a great influence.  His ability to mix up his sounds (production and DJ wise) and yet make himself sound fresh and relevant each time, has to be applauded in my eyes.

Feel free to let me know your thoughts!

Love,

Disko Trooper xx
