Introducing... Ghostee!

In only a few days, East Project's first release will finally be hitting the Beatport shelves and with a debut release that features five excellent artists, we thought it only fair to catch up with them and get a little background info on each!

Today is the turn Dj/Producer... Ghostee!

Please introduce yourself:

Hello I'm Ghostee, I'm a 26 year old house producer / DJ from London.

How would you describe your sound?

I would say my sound is dark and heavy, I listen to a lot of old grime so, I think that comes across in my music sometimes. I find it really hard to make uplifting happy music; it always turns into something dark.

Who would you say is your biggest influence and has helped shape your style?

At the moment Hugo Massien and Blazey are having a big impact on the music I'm making, they raise the levels every time they put something out and it's different to everything else out there, also Blazey helps me a lot by giving me feedback on everything I'm making almost instantly.

If you could only do one, producing or DJing?

At the moment I'm really enjoying the production side, I sit for hours messing about with things and coming up with mad ideas for tunes. Saying that, I haven't played many DJ sets yet; they have mainly been small parties; I can imagine playing to a few thousand people would be amazing! So promoters hit me up for bookings haha.

You're a London boy, so where is your normal stomping ground on a night out?

To be honest this year I haven't been out as much as I should have really… I have a daughter so she keeps me busy at the weekends. I used to go to fabric a lot; that place is special to me! The nights I've had in there will be hard to beat and I've met people I still talk to now in that place.
The nest on a Friday is good as well, they always have good line-ups, but Yeah fabric has made a massive impact on me and is the reason I wanted to be a DJ.

I just want to say a quick shout out to Nightshift, Louie Anderson and Brackles for the support and letting people know who I am.

East Project Podcast - Donagrandi

Episode 16 of the East Project podcast series and it's full of party bangers!  Donagrandi serves up the a jumping mix of House and G-House monsters...  Enjoy!

1 - Please introduce yourself and give us a little background on how you got into DJing and producing?

Hi, my Name is Donovan Saarloos, preforming under the name Donagrandi as an Amsterdam based DJ... I've got the same cliche background story as every DJ I guess; started young at the age of 12 on vinyl; I started with really hard techno in 2001; I did a lot of underground parties and a lot of student things of course for free and as many other gigs as possible...

In 2006 I really had enough of techno and wanted to get more skills in DJing so I started to play Hip Hop and learned the art of urban DJing.  In 2010 I started to combine all styles in one eclectic mix and I started to get a better picture what I liked to play, so I started producing deep house/g-house with a pop and sometimes Hip Hop touch and now in 2015 I’ve got my game tight and my sound is clear for everyone.  I put my roots in a 2015 vibe and I started winning.

2 - Which do you prefer, DJing or Producing?

I am more like a remixer and a drummer than a real producer… but I know my way around the studio.  I finished my audio engineering diploma in 2007 to record and mix for other artists and indie bands.  Until 2010 I preferred DJing because until that time, you could do a really good job as a DJ, who is only DJing...  I only wanted to produce to explain my sound to people and to make difference and get to play for a higher fee.  Now that I am living in the studio more than I live at home, I have really started to like it.  I work with the best musicians, singers and songwriters and signed in 2014 to one of the best dance publishers – Music Allstars Publising.

3 - What is the Dutch club scene like right now and what sound is making the biggest waves?  How does G-House fit in with this?

I think there is a difference between the Dutch club scene and the Amsterdam scene…  The Dutch scene is really into the urban eclectic vibe, trap, hiphop and commercial big room kinda house sounds.

Otherwise in Amsterdam it’s a really big deep house scene and a lot of local DJs who are travelling the world because of their sounds; Acts like Detroit Swindle, Quinten 909, Homework, The Voyagers and many more are responsible for an upcoming sound that is taking over the world right now!  Like a lot of popular mainstream genres, I expect that the Dutch deep house crossover sounds are taking over the world in 2015/2016… G-house is just a small part of the sound spectrum but it’s hot right now!!

4 - If we came to watch and listen to you DJ, what could we expect?

You will hear an eclectic vibe of the house genre; I put deep house, tecno, nudisco ,g-house and bass in one mix and it is in the same tempo as I would mix Hip Hop or poppy tracks; where regular deep house DJs play 20 tracks an hour,  I do 40!  Always high energy, woman and gay friendly with one goal… to wreck the place!

5 - What exciting plans do you have for 2015?

A lot of tracks, remixes and cool gigs upcoming...  Highlights:
New releases on East Project and a lot of new bangers with my buddy Quinten 909
More podcasts on iTunes and more edits that u can't download.

We’re now planning a UK tour in March, so hope the UK people like my kind of energy...

Introducing... Lennart Richter!

So, the news is finally out there...  The East Project record label is kicking off in style with a VA containing 5 excellent original tracks from a variety of producers!

And here we can introduce you to the first of those artists - Lennart Richter!

(Out on Monday 2nd February exclusively on Beatport)

On your soundcloud you list your sounds as Deep House and NuDisco but also use the term G-House when tagging your music…  What does the G-House term mean to you?

Well I can only offer my interpretations of certain genres. Although a lot of G-House seems to be Tech-House with old Rap Vocals lately, to me it means a certain Vibe that you'll get from the track, and as long as it has that it can range from funky to deep to minimal and still work as far as I'm concerned.

Do you get a lot of influence from the music scene in Berlin or do you look further to other places around the world?

Although Berlin is considered one of the party capitals in the world, the music that's played in the clubs has neither changed much over the course of the last 5 years nor is it very inspirational. Also, with very few exceptions like the Chalet, you won't find any proper Deep House or Nu Disco. Most Clubs are still focused on mostly bassline only / minimalistic sounds and play either Tech-House, Techno or Goa - 3 Genres I really can't connect with that much. That doesn't mean I don't like to party in Berlin though.

Are you originally from Berlin or have you moved there recently?  It has been the place to go to in Europe over the past 5/10 years, if you are into the underground house and techno scene…  It must be great having that right on your doorstep?!

Born and raised in Berlin. Only place I can imagine living in in Germany.

You give away a lot of your productions and edits on soundcloud…  Do you make these records in order to give them away or do you make them for your own DJ sets and then feel the need to share them with the world?

I'm just a pretty impatient producer if you will, so often I finish a track in an hour or so and have no original Vocal at hand or just get the idea a certain vocal would fit the track well and then I just run with it. In Germany, you cannot play any bootlegs or unofficial remixes in clubs, otherwise you'll get in real trouble with the GEMA so including them in my sets isn't an option sadly. Free Download to me is obligatory with everything that's not going to be for sale.

If you are not DJing in Berlin, where else is the world would you like to be playing?

I've been lucky enough to play at last year’s Vogelball (MS DOCKVILLE) in Hamburg in August and did a few other gigs in other German cities, so I guess UK would be my next station.  But I'm not afraid of traveling at all and always willing to play as long as food and travel expenses are covered.

Your tune coming out on East Project features MAG.  Have you collaborated before and how does that process normally work?

Actually I just used an existing freestyle of him and cutted it up a bit. I discovered him over Soundcloud I think, and asked if he'd be willing to send me the acapella.

He's a cool guy, but we've never met in person since he's from Baltimore and I haven't been in the US for quite some time now… Last we spoke, he was going to record some new material and I'm pretty sure you will hear another collaboration between us.
