Catching up with Ethyl (Secretsundaze / Tsuba)...

"Hailing from the leafy home counties and connecting with music at a young age, Tim Hopgood AKA Ethyl, displays a musical knowledge and affinity for the groove far beyond his 25 years. Like many of today’s finest, while constantly looking forward, he has one eye placed firmly on the retrospective..." So his biography goes!!

Prior to his appearance at CLUB MO this Friday, we thought we would send over a few questions to the man called Ethyl... We discuss his favourite producers, how his DJing style has developed and the joys of ending up on the Secretsundaze agency. Oh, and how his MO growing is coming along. Enjoy!

How’s it going? What has been going on in the world of Ethyl recently?

It's going really well thanks. I've been the busiest I've ever been recently and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself.

I’ve known you since some of your first outings on the DJ circuit… How do you feel your style has changed over the years?

"Some of"??? You gave me my first set in the capital all those years ago. A lot has changed since then! You've got a kid and I've got a bad back but I feel I still look for the same things in the music I play. Obviously the content is different, I was younger then but I think the same things still turn me on.

You’ve managed to release your records on such labels as Tsuba, Cecille, Freerange, Quintessentials, Secretsundaze… How does it feel to have your music released on such respected labels?

It obviously feels great to know that people whose opinions matter to me have enough faith in what I do to support it with their reputations as well as their pockets. A lot of people are very keen to get their music out. Arguably before it's 'ripened', so pop up labels make it easy for people to do that. This isn't a bad thing, it's less cliquey but it can mean the quality control drops.

Talking about secretsundaze, you’re signed up to their secret agency. How did that come about? It feels like a perfect match for you, as you seem to share much of the same ideals when it comes to music… Do you feel at home there?

It all came about at the same time as discussions about the label happened. I was sending music to James and Giles and they were talking about the reformed singles label as well as the agency. It works great for me; I'm among people I hold in high esteem and it means I can concentrate on the things I enjoy doing. Since the guys have been doing this for so long, the longevity to what they do is apparent and that's important because I've got no back up plan.

What producers are rocking your world at the moment? Anyone that is not getting the attention you think they deserve?

It's inevitable that the most noise doesn't tend to be around the best producers so there are a lot of people that fall into this category. They are lauded in certain circles but I don't think they get the reverence warranted. Off the top of my head; 7 Citizens, STL, John Heckle, BLM, Kassem Mosse, Vakula and this guy I happened across on soundcloud, William Gebert. But probably my standout producer at the moment is XDB, that guy can do no wrong!

Lastly, many of the DJs and people turning up to Club Mo have donated their top lip for the month of November to growing a moustache in support of The Prostate Cancer Charity… How is your Mo coming along?

It's laughable and rat like and I'm sure I'm allergic to it!

Meeting Elijah "Jnr J" Collins before his headline set at CLUB MO...

How’s it going? What should I be calling you these days? Jnr J or Elijah?

Good question, I’m now at the point where I don’t know who to introduce my self as... I’ve got 5 names on my passport, so I’ll use a different one for each project, so lets go with Elijah.

You say in your biography that Elijah manifested himself in the summer of 2010 and that infamous London underground party Lo*Kee is to blame… Tell us more?

For a long while I got really bored with music. The long minimal summer lasted about two years too long. Techno was cool for a while but I got bored, then after that tech house sounded like it was sponsored by fair trade companies. At first I really enjoyed the ethnic vocals but it got to a point where every party was like watching a movie in an unknown language without subtitles. I can’t play what I don’t like, so as I couldn’t find anything, I just stopped.

I’ll always love to dance so I retreated to underground club nights that hardly anyone knew about which lead me to Lo*kee. It’s one of those parties that were started by promoters who are are in it for the right reasons, who have stuck to their convictions and have an amazing ear for diverse underground sounds and past music. It got me excited and always made me want to go home and make music after.

I always liked your DJ style and productions under your Jnr J name. How have you changed under the new moniker?

Where as Jnr J was a DJ project, I’ve started Elijah as a producer project. I’m having a lot of fun writing music and even more fun seeing it work on the dance floor. I’ve started to learn the bass and keys, so that I can enhance my productions. DJ wise, I feel I have more freedom than before to play exactly what I want as nobody has any expectations of Elijah. It’s an awesome feeling of total freedom.

You already have a couple of successful releases as Elijah Collins on Mullet Records, alongside your friends Nist and Tee-J, but what direction do you plan on taking your new sound?

I’ll pretty much do anything I’m feeling. At the moment I’m diggin the Nu Disco sound but I’m already seeing that I won’t be into this for ever. For the winter I’m working on a couple of deep disco bits to keep you all warm. I’m making what I feel is right for me so am working on stuff with a range of influences such as rare groove, deep house and even miami bass. I’m just going to do what makes me want to dance. I’ve also started writing more in tune with my emotions and using music as a way of expressing what I can’t put into words.

I’ve heard some of your solo material on Soundcloud, "8 minutes of rude" a particular favourite! In fact, I described it as if it was made for the follow up to the Tron Legacy movie. Are there plans for releasing that track and the others? Have any labels shown interest in them?

Cheers fella. I’ve just sent "8 mins" of to a vocalist who I’ve worked with in the past. After this we’re going to sit down together and come up with some colabs which I’m really excited about. I also have some other bits signed which are awaiting release. So far, so good.

You’ve also had a lot of support from a certain Vito De Luca from Aeroplane (one of my biggest influences of the past few years for sure). How does that feel?

To get support from people like Aeroplane and Mullet recordings is truly amazing! It’s like when you’re at school and the big children give you a nod. It helps to confirm that your on the right track. I’ve also been getting love from people who I started on the scene with, like yourself, Eric Volta, the guys at Lower East and my newly appointed Get Diverted residency. It's really amazing to feel the love from your peers and to see everybody moving forward in their goals.

And you got to warm up for him at a recent Get Diverted gig, where he dropped your track, Love’s Down. How was that? The videos of the moment online look wicked!!

Watch the video I made. I lost the plot when he played it and broke out into full vocal... Watching the video back made me realise that I can’t sing. I sound like a cat in a washing machine! It was one of the best moments of my career and the fact that it was one of the biggest tunes of his set made it all sweeter. I was buzzing for weeks.

Lastly, you’re playing a b2b set with Tee-J for our charity event, Club Mo. What can people expect from your set? And have you been growing your Mo?

Tee-J and I have very similar backgrounds and influences, we both grew up with mothers who used to rinse music and we probably both have gotten a beating for scratching mum’s 5 Star ep... Or that may have just been me.

It’s gonna be like soul train 2011 or like watching a blaxplotation movie. There will be so much funk that it’s gonna pimp slap anyone close enough!

Introducing... Elijah Collins!! (and our charity party Club Mo - No Mo, No Entry)

Having first met this guy around 2004 and being blown away by his infectious DJ style and tune selection, it was with a little surprise when I first heard of his new side project...

Jnr J was a guaranteed floor filler across the London night life and afterparty scene, playing a mixture of upfront house, tech and electro than would guarantee to send a rocket up the arse of even the most tired and jaded clubbers! His success even spawned one of the great parties of all mother f***ing parties - Jnr's Jamm. Packing out the club in Brixton by the same name with the new and relatively unknown DJ at the time, Sebastien Leger, was definitely a highlight!

So after a number of trips to London's infamous party Lo*Kee, in 2010, Elijah Collins manifested itself in Jnr J and finally came to the surface funkin and blazing its way to the forefront. And apparently, he's here to stay "with a pimpin attitude and sick productions to to match!"

"Having re-invented himself, Jnr now has the total freedom to do as he sees fit focussing on deep house, nu disco, nu funk and anything else with the pimp factor!"

With Elijah Collins having featured at such parties as Creche and Get Diverted, and a number of superb productions alongside his mates Nist and Tee-J, that have been getting support from non other than the mighty Aeroplane, I think it is safe to say that Jnr J's side project has well and truely landed!!

"I love todays music but not as much as I will always love the older stuff so it's time to bring it back without fucking with it too much. Let's modernize this mother....!"

East Project Podcast - Episode 1 featuring Johnny Mikes

"East Project”… The concept is simple, play music that everyone loves and not stipulate on any one genre. You could therefore have a bit of Deep, Tech, House and even Disco... All goes at this new Party!! Our aim is to be mixing it up at each night, keeping it fresh, new and interesting, with different headliners and a dirt-fuelled sound!

With this in mind and wanting to bring you a regular podcast with mixes from East Project's guest DJs, the residents and selected friends, we thought what better way to kick off proceedings, than with the fun filled house sounds of the one and only - Johnny Mikes!!

Johnny had a quieter 2010, by his standards, but he seems ready and re-inspired to make 2011 really count!! Having already made a couple of appearances at London's notorious Sunday party CRECHE, and getting himself back behind the production desk, we thought what better way to round off our 1st birthday celebrations than inviting this guaranteed floor destroying Cowboy!

1 year in the musical life of East Project

For our next piece in the build up to East Project's 1st Birthday @ CAMP on Friday 30th September, I (Disko Trooper) thought I would bring you a round up of the music that has sound-tracked the warm-ups at EAST PROJECT parties this first year...

The launch of East Project took place on the first floor of The Horse & Groom, the infamous Shoreditch disco pub, on Curtain Road... With a packed room within 1 hour of opening, the following tracks helped set the tone for what was to follow:

"J2THAB" PBR Streetgang by ISM Records

The Second party took place in the basement of the of The Workshop, Old Street. With Rob Mello booked as the headline guest, the night kicked off in a pure mix of disco tek. These tunes made it into my warm-up:

Drop Out City Rockers - International Track by Drop Out Orchestra

The last East Project saw Richie Ahmed bring us the sounds of Hot Natured and warm-up was tailored accordingly...

What will be sound tracking the warm-up for East Project's 1st birthday?? Well, you'lll just have to come and find out!!

Introducing... Johnny Mikes!

So, following on from meeting the headline guest for EAST PROJECT's 1st BIRTHDAY on Friday 30th September @ CAMP (City Arts & Music Project), we thought we would grab a quick word with our second headline DJ for the night...

Johnny Mikes had a quieter 2010, by his standards, but he seems ready and re-inspired to make 2011 really count!! Having already made a couple of appearances at London's notorious Sunday party CRECHE, and getting himself back behind the production desk, we thought what better way to round off our 1st birthday celebrations than inviting this guaranteed floor destroying Cowboy!

Did someone say, SAMBUCA???

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you are up to at the moment?

Hi I am of course Johnny Mikes. I'm a London based person who plays music using trusted turntables, cdj's and my apple mac. I'm also a producer who's been a regular fixture on the underground circuit for most notably the last eight years. After taking a bit of a back seat in 2010 I've very recently been inspired by some changes and events in my life along with the new breed of DJ's and producers breaking through.

Have you been in the studio recently?

Yes I have indeed. I've been working hard over the last couple of months on my new EP with my good friend Michael Jansons. The first track off the EP 'Broken Hearts' seems to be causing a bit of a stir on the dance floor which I'm super chuffed about.

Once part of the infamous Ninja Cowboys... Are we ever going to see you guys back DJing together again?

Being part of the Ninja Cowboys was an amazing musical and life experience for me. We were fresh faced puppies on the music scene and from humble beginnings we got to play at the best parties alongside the best DJ's in all corners of the world. We managed to have our music on the BBC Radio 1 saturday dance show playlists and received so much praise from all our piers and talents we looked up to which was immense. It was such a fantastic musical journey that allowed us to make some great friends along the way. In the end we naturally went off in different directions. Cozzy D has gone on to co-create the much hyped record label 'Lower East' and also co-promotes London's buzz word party 'Creche'. Mark Storie is with the Toolroom Records family constantly touring and doing some great things there. My path set me away from music for a while to pursue other goals in life, however if you've got a burning passion for music you can't escape the beats. Going back to the original question, who knows what the future holds.

What are your 3 killer tracks at present?

This has got to be the question every DJ is cagey about answering. My current killer three tracks are sacred but there is some magnificent music currently being produced by Gav Memnos & Eric Volta, Michael Jansons and Wildkats, so watch this space.

Your tune in the bag that never fails to get the floor moving, old or new?

Wow there's a fair few in my box of tricks at the moment but i'll go for a bit of an obvious one today in the form of Adonis 'No Way Back'

Favourite dj at present and why?

I would have to say Lo Kee's Nisekay. He is so consistent and has a marvellous ear for music. There's never ever been a set of his that my feet won't groove to.

Its our first birthday tell us what to expect from a Johnny Mikes set these days?

You can't beat the feeling of knowing your making everybody in the room shake a leg, so definitely expect my signature rolling electronic groove inspired by 80's claps, bells and drum machines. I tend not to stick to one musical genre as I'm a firm believer in breaking down genre barriers, so depending on the aura of the evening there will also be a mixed bag of musical treats at the ready. Ultimately my aim will be to have everybody locked on the dance floor from the beginning to end partying their little socks off.

What is your favourite drink?

Favourite drink is currently dark rum and ginger beer, however my buddy that will accompany me from the pre party to the club to the after party to the after after party is my trusted friend white SAMBUCA. Long live the Sambuca.

Introducing... RUSS YALLOP

Here's a date for your diaries - FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER - East Project will be celebrating it's 1st Birthday at CAMP (City Arts & Music Project)!!!

From it's first forays into the nightlife world with a jam packed launch party on the first floor of the Horse & Groom, Shorditch's infamous disco pub, to it's second event in the dark sleazy basement of the Workshop near Old Street, which suited Rob Mello's deep disco house vibes perfectly, before hopping across the roundabout to the perfectly formed and more permanent EP home of the upstairs @ CAMP. The last party was headlined by the fresh sounds of Richy Ahmed from the Hot Natured crew, who absolutely tore the roof off by the way, so who better to get down and step it up another level for the 1st birthday than the one and only RUSS YALLOP?!?!

Unless you have been living under a rock (or simply don't follow the British house music scene), then this man should need no introducing! Releasing on such labels as Hot Creations, Leftroom, Rebelion and now a fully fledged member of the Crosstown Rebels team, his sound is infected with warm charm and boundless energy. Along with his close group of friends (Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed, Robert James), Russ has be putting the fun back into house music, with not only the UK but now the whole world sitting up and taking notice!

To say we are chuffed to have him booked for East Project's 1st birthday would be an understatement!!

Anyway, enough from me and let's here from the man himself...

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you are up to at the moment?

At the moment working hard on the new Hot Creations mix album which is kind of like 'the story so far' for the label, a mix based on their releases to date so people who don't necessarily buy singles can acquaint themselves on what the label has been doing. In between gigs that is!

How does it feel to be part of the Cross town Rebel Family?

It feels great to be part of Crosstown as it really is a group of creatives who've been stretching the boundaries of underground dance music the last few years. But mostly its that everyone seems to be on the same level, and that level is just simply good vibes and good times. It's basically a bunch of party people who understand that dance music is about going to parties and having fun.

Your 3 killer tracks at present?

3 killer tracks, hmm tough one as once u declare you killers to the world they cease to become your killers and become everyone elses! So I'll say there's tracks by Richy Ahmed, Miguel Campbell and Maceo Plex that I play every set and always do the business.

Your tune in the bag that never fails to get the floor moving old or new?

Ok well since the above refers to new music for this I'll say Lee Foss - U Make Me Shy. It's kind of old as I've had it a while but it's not been released so it hasn't been overplayed yet, apart from by me! Anyway amazing track, possibly one of my favourite of Lee's which is a big accolade!

Favorite dj at present and why?

Favourite DJ is a tough one as you kind of only end up being at parties which play the music you most identify with, so I'm only really familiar with a handful of DJs and where they're at at the moment. They also all happen to be all my best friends! So predictable answer but gonna have to say my boys which is Jamie, Lee, Richy and Rob...

Its our first birthday tell us what to expect from a Russ Yallop set?

Ok a typical set from me actually contains a mixed bag of 'moods'. Definitely expect a dark tangent at some point, I'm I big fan of darkness so always go on a dark run and get a bit evil at some point. The start of the set is normally groovy, get people's hips shaking before u try to step up or step down anywhere. They'll def be a peak where some thumpers get aired, gotta av it larrrge at some point ;). And usually and somewhat predictably wrap things up with tracks which have that uplifting and conclusive vibe about them, send ‘em off with a smile! :D

What is your favourite drink?

Favourite drink is a big question for a booze head like me as have different drinks for different parts of the night. Usually start on the beers, draught preferably. After a few beers I start looking and feeling like I'm pregnant so move onto the shorts, usually vodka cranberry or if I'm in a bit of sleep debt vodka red bull. Once I start to slur and stagger too much I ditch the spirits and move onto the after partier's trusted friend, cider. Once the cider starts to lose it's appeal the Agua gets it's turn which usually accompanies me to my bed. So my favourite drink depends on what time u ask me really, and if u ask me when I'm in the studio it'll have to be a Tetley, no sugar ;)

East Project Influences... GREG WILSON!

Greg Wilson has been at the forefront of the UK DJ/mixing scene for years... Even before I was born!! Having heard his name in the past, I never really paid any attention until a few years ago, when I download a mix of his live from the Space Terraza for We Love in 2008. I was automatically hooked!

Greg Wilson Live at We Love... Sundays 2008 - available from here: http://www.welove-music.com/we-love-DJs/Greg-Wilson

That mix was shortly followed by arguably the best Essential Mix of the year for Radio One on 17th January 2009. Mixing in everything from Rufus and Chakah Khan, to the Happy Mondays and 808 State, this mix really turned me on to the idea that no matter how old a record is, if it's good, it will stand the test of time and can fit in to a modern day set and not sound out of place!

ESSENTIAL MIX (by greg wilson for bbc radio 1) by gregwilson

Alongside the many mixes that can be found on Greg's soundcloud page, there are also numerous free edits that people can download and now included in their own DJ sets. A recent revival of some never released before edits and mash-ups that Greg used exclusively for his own DJ sets, are now seeing the light of day, to a great response from his fans.

Edits & Mash-Ups by gregwilson

Now, if all of that wasn't enough, Mr Wilson also finds the time to write and fill his on website with numerous stories from his almost encyclopedic knowledge of the early disco, soul and funk scene (and music in general), alongside his general view points on film, art, literature and anything else that is an influence in his life. To say it's all a good read would be an understatement. Check it out here: http://www.gregwilson.co.uk

Finally, for anyone who hasn't seen this clip of Greg "The First Ever DJ To Mix Live On UK Television" Wilson, this is a MUST!!

INFLUENCES... Aeroplane!!

So, for our next installment of EAST PROJECT INFLUENCES we come to the one (well, there were 2 producers under this name originally) and only..........Aeroplane!!

First coming across their music thanks to a number of great remixes in 2008, their mix of all things disco, indie, pop and house made for a great fun listen. Blending the old with the new, their sound has never stood still and hearing this mixture work so well together truly influenced the way I have listened to music over the past few years!!

Below are a couple of my personal favourite remixes, along with a mix for you to get your ears around:

Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix): This is what my wife and I had at our wedding as our exit song from the church... magical!!

Grace Jones - William's Blood (Aeroplane Remix)

And Aeroplane's latest mix on soundcloud (although, all are worth a listen if you have time):

The Sound of MaxWorthy!

So, after a long old wait, East Project founder and resident MaxWorthy finally got round to putting a little mix together for our listening pleasure... With an obvious influence from the disco-tek sounds of people such as Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, this mix is the perfect way to get you warmed up for our next event in September!!

Free Music!! Death On The Balcony - Cruel Banana

Here we are with some more free music, this time courtesy of the Soul Clap boys and an edit put together by Leeds based duo Death On The Balcony... Again, this was found on soundcloud and made it into the "House of East Project Mix" back at the start of this month.

Every time it has been dropped at EAST PROJECT, the dancefloor has been grooving and singing along to this little beauty!!

Tune Alert... Danny Daze - Your Everything (Hot Creations) OUT NOW!!!

This tune has been hammered by the big hitters for a few months now and has finally been released... Expect every house DJ to be dropping this in their sets at some point over the summer!

To say this tune is infectious would be an understatement. Danny Daze has managed to create a beast of a record, that still manages to maintain its subtlety throughout with deep vocals and one funky as you like bass line and drop!!

Oh, and Richie Ahmed dropped it at EAST PROJECT @ CAMP on the 10th June and the the place went off!!

INFLUENCES... The Revenge!!

So for our second instalment of East Project INFLUENCES, I would like to introduce to you Graeme Clark... Otherwise known as to the dance floor massive as "The Revenge" or "6th Borough Project"!!

First checking out his productions a couple of years ago, Graeme has as an ability to mix up styles varying from vocal nudisco sounds to the more straight up house beats without ever loosing focus on the groove. A prolific producer and remixer (along with numerous great edits), his live mixes also have a special way of starting out slowly and smoothly before building till you feel more than just your toe tapping and want to get up and dance!

Here are some links to favourite tunes and mixes that can all be found on his soundcloud... With over 10000 followers, he's not short of attention and with a gig diary bursting at the seems, it certainly wont be long till you witness this DJ/producer on a dance floor near you (maybe he'd make a good guest at East Project one day??).

This is the fist tune I got into from the Revenge and made me look out for other productions... The Revenge - Night Flight:

This is another favourite from when I first started looking out his productions:

This is great mix from the one and only Resident Adviser podcast - RA 166:

And finally, this mix is a little more recent... Get The Curse Mix:

East Project INFLUENCES...

For the first in my many to come posts on influences, I'm going to go for a fairly big and obvious choice to start with...

This guy, alongside Jamie Jones, has been redefining the way house music is played by introducing us to new tunes and mixes that are overflowing with his vast personal tastes in music. From disco funk to R&B, hip-hop to house and with a smattering of techno, this guy fuses all that the youth of the 80s, 90s and noughties were into and bringing it right back up to date with a modern, slower house vibe.

To say that his record labels have been riding a wave of popularity for the past year and half would be an understatement! Anything the Hot Creations and now Hot Waves labels release seems to hit a nerve with everyone on the dancefloor and is guaranteed to get a party moving wherever their music is played.

All involved at East Project have been influenced by the sounds that this guy plays and it was with great pleasure that we secured Richie Ahmed (Hot Natured artist and resident DJ) to play at our event last Friday @ CAMP... Hopefully more link ups with artists from those labels will happen in the future too!!

But for now, here is one and only LEE FOSS! This mix has been online for less than a week and already has over 2000 plays... Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
