MUSICALITY... Interview & Podcast!

As further proof to our Brazilian love affair and the fact it is Christmas, we have a second podcast for the month and this time it is from the excellent MUSICALITY!

Expect a house extravaganza!!

Hi Rafael, you've started a new project recently under the alias Musicality. Can you tell us a bit about that and what’s coming up over the next few month?

Hello !! okay !! I would like to thank East Project for the opportunity of this interview.  The purpose I use the name Musicality was to change the principle of a common name for a stage name, and also because as electronic music here in Brazil is growing, I began to realize that many people who never had any connection with music, started coming to this branch and that a lot of bad music and many errors started to appear.  So I chose that name Musicality, which is the minimum that a musician or music producer can offer your audience.

When you meet somebody that does not know you are a dj for the first time, how do you introduce yourself?

Present myself as an ordinary person like all the others, but in the middle of the conversation, she says she likes electronic music, I say I like it a lot too and a I'm DJ and music producer.

If you had to pick one track you have made, what would be your favourite?

Another producer would be, Maceo Plex - Can not Leave You! One of mine would be, Musicality - I Do not Feel Nothing (Original Mix)!!

If you could collaborate with any producer, who would it be and why?

Here in Brazil all the producers would help a lot and collaborate with one another. I always collaborate on the musical part, so I understand more and if I have any questions, I ask for help too but that is quite rare. We all collaborate with one another because I know that one day I might need them too.

The music scene in Brazil, tell us how it is at present and any producers who are really making their mark on the scene?

As I said in the previous answer the scene of electronic music here in Brazil is growing, and with that comes lots of people trying to get into the business and also some very good music producers who really understand the subject and are making a name in the scene as: Loud Control, Grove Delight, pLASTC Robots, Flex B, Rafael Carvalho (Cuff), Alok Live, Live Vegas, Kash, Chemical Surf, Dashdot, Flow and Zeo, Gabriel Boni, HNQO, Gabe, Hot Bullet, Dakar Oak, Vintage Culture , The Duo, Wehbba, Gustavo Mota, Re Dupre, Rodolfo Zhor, Felipe Godoi, Max Duke, Dash Groove, Kriptus Gomes, Black Soulp, DJ Glen, Anderson Beher, Violent Marco, Lauro Viotti, Handersondj, Dake and many others that did not remember now...

But those who are being quoted throughout Brazil and abroad, making a name for themselves, making money and most importantly doing what you love, it is important to note that although the electronic music scene in Brazil is growing, the difficulties to be recognized here, it is still different to other countries.

Dado Prisco... Interview and Podcast!

In the East Project office, we definitely seem to have a love affair going on with the Brazilians right now and we have managed to get another of their rising stars to provide us with one almighty mix for our Podcast series...

This time round we welcome the excellent DADO PRISCO!!!

INTERVIEW

What are you up to at the moment?

Now I’m getting ready for next year`s summer in Europe, which I’ll be staying for 4 months touring, so now I have to get a good number of tracks ready so they can all be released next year, also a few remixes and a compilation compiled by me for the German label Kiez Beatz, which is made of only Brazilian artists to show how much diversity we have in the electronic music scene in Brazil. And I’m working on about 7 original tracks with vocalists as well, to be released next year.

You have done quite a few bootlegs, what is your favourite to date and why?

I think my favourite is the Marvin Gaye one, that track is really strong and always works on the dancefloor, I’m working with a vocalist on it actually, to maybe make it as an original track so it can be released.

If you could remix any track past or present, what would it be and why?

It would be Shadows, from Hot Since 82 feat. Alex Mills. I just love the vocals so much, and the track hits so hard that it’s only possible to play at peak time of a set. I would love to do a more chilled version so it could be played in other situations as well, because I think the vocals would work perfectly.

If we was to come out to Floripa for a night out, where would you take us and what is the best club for music?

I would probably take you to Warung, which is 40min from Floripa but it's the craziest club for music and vibes. But if it had to be in Floripa, I would take you to Terrazzo, which is an outside area of Pacha and they have crazy line ups as well, and are very well known for partying up until midday... ahaha

In 2014, what labels for you have made the biggest impact?

I really liked the stuff that came out on Objektivity, very unique tracks!  I pretty much bought all of it and played them out a lot. Also Still Vor Talent, I really like their stuff, always releasing good music.

What do you predict is going to be big for you in 2015?

I’m working at the moment with well established vocalists for a few tracks, which will have potential for some bigger labels, so I hope they work out and they get to be released by them and also to have more shows in Europe for the summer.

INTERVIEW...

You are from Sweden, what made you move to London?

Originally my parents jobs dragged me here against my will, but I quickly discovered dance music and got completely sucked in. I love Sweden and would happily go back one day but currently East London is just so buzzing. There's an entrepreneurial spirit in the air and it's really refreshing to see people all around you giving whatever they believe in a chance. The fact that underground dance music which I completely believe in, is something that pretty much your average person is into, is also a bit of a unique situation when you come from a smaller country. There's a community of creative, passionate and discerning people here who make it easy to become inspired.

How does the music scene here compare to back home?

Stockholm in particular is for me the most advanced clubbing destination in Sweden. Similarly to here there's a community centered around clubs, record stores and "openair" forest raves which really is thriving at the moment. Labels like Studio Barnhus, Local Talk, Oh! Records etc. are pushing what I think is a distinctively Swedish deep house sound and clubs in the city such as the Tradgarden, Under Bron and Berns regularly put on cutting edge international and local DJ's. The largest difference between London and Stockholm I think is the number of people who are interested in this stuff. Over the summer I was playing in Stockholm and ended up going to a party featuring Genius of Time, Moodyman, Baba Stiltz and a few others and 50% of that crowd was made up of Stockholm's most recognised and talented DJ's. In London the diversity, spread and regularity of this stuff is much larger and in turn creates an environment where nuances of dance music can easily exist and cross-pollinate with each other.

Tell us what you are up to at the moment?

I've just wrapped up another E.P for Oh Records! and looking forward to hearing back some remixes of that. Two of these tracks I've featured in the mix I've done here. There's loads of production stuff happening at the moment with remixes for various artists (hush hush) and yet another 3 track E.P to wrap up before 2014 is over. Keep your eyes pealed for a music video for my track All I Think About (Monitor 66 remix) which came out earlier this year too.

What track for you has stood out the most this year and why?

I'm really into Leon Vynehall at the moment, the guy is on a roll at the moment and this ticks all the boxes for me.

If you could pick any producer current or past who would you most like to work with?

Over the last two years I've been deeply interested in the music of J.Dilla. It's no coincidence that a lot of producers site his music as influential and for me personally he had a strong effect in terms of how I approach creating dance music. I largely dis-regarded hip-hop before I got into Fantastic Vol 2 (Slum Village prod by Dilla) but the raw, sparse funk of those tracks is so original and moving and really something I'd like to translate into the dance domain.

Thank you.

Influences... JAMES HOLDEN!

This time Gilly, one half of Rough Cut and one of the brains behind East Project, shares with us another of his big influences of the past 10 years...  And this time, he's going all techno on us!!

"One of my biggest influences and love in the world of techno has to be James Holden...!"

"I remember a friend telling me to listen to the album he released back in 2006 - The Idiots Are Winning. This album blew me away and since then I have loved seeing him!"

"We had one mix we always used to listen to before we went out. It was a James Holden Kiss 100 Transitions guest mix for John Digweed's show. This truly shows how good the man is..."

Click link to listen to mix

"We have had the pleasure of meeting him and seeing him many, many times over the years from clubs – warehouses – festivals. Each time amazing us with his sets...

A couple of standout sets have to be at TDK Festival and The End. Neither of these clubs exist anymore, so it feels even more special we got to see him at them!"

"His label Border Community has some amazing releases on and definitely worth checking out and we recently caught him at Field Day, where he played a Live set, which was extra special!"

Check out his record label/community on the link below:

There will always be DJs and producers that influence everyone differently but there is no denying the talents of James Holden...  Whether it's behind a mixing desk or in a DJ booth, the man knows how to produce those moments when you just go wow!

East Project Podcast Feat. Nine Lives... + interview

So for the 2nd podcast in the row, we have decided to go all disco/NuDisco and bring you the excellent talents of Nine Lives!
This Manchester resident has an amazing array of productions!! It is definitely worth checking out his Soundcloud page to understand why we invited him along to do a mix for us...
Enjoy!!

Tracklist:
1. Cassius/Outcast - Feeling for Rosa (Flight Facilities remix)
2. Nine Lives - Adagio
3. Kraak & Smaak - Back Again (Hot Toddy Mix)
4. L.O.O.P - Criticize (original mix)
5. Jam Xpress vs Navaho - Bicep
6. Mylo - Drop the pressure (Drop Out Orchesta mix)
7. Purple Disco Machine - Musique (original mix)
8. Oriano - Pony feat. Ray Horton (original mix)
9. Session Victim - Never Forget
10. Mark E - RnB Drunkie
11. Marvin Gaye - Sexual healing (Nine Lives rework)

Tell us where the name Nine Lives comes from?

At first I came up with the name "cat funk", so you can see a pattern forming! Yes I am a cat fan which is the obvious part, but I also like the myth behind "Nine Lives" and the idea that if you fall, you can still land on your feet.

What is the music scene at the moment like in Manchester?

The scene in Manchester has been and continues to be huge for electronic music, from warehouse parties to small dark basements we've had from Tiger & Woods and Finnebassen to Late Nite Tuff Guy, all in recent months so the vibes are till strong!

Disco is making a big comeback, any guys who are bringing it at the moment?

As far as artists who I admire in the nu-disco scene, I would say there is too many to name, some people make one track you love, I often find that's the case, but it's exciting the choice of artists we have to listen to at the moment.

We are big fans of your bootleg tracks - at East Project we love Sexual Healing!  What is your favourite one to date?

Thanks for your support on my marvin gaye rework, for some reason the response to that track was off the scale which was nice to see! I really enjoyed working with that vocal, maybe it's hard not to love a marvin gaye edit? Along with "so into u" and "adagio" those would probably be my favourite productions to date.

Tell us a bit about Vendition and how you got involved?

It's actually my good friend, Matt Lees who runs Vendition records. In 2011 I sent him a track I had made just for fun and he said we should release it and he would be my manager! I said sure let’s do it and didn't think much more from it, next thing you know he's set up his own label just to release this one track called "1985"! I do release all my tracks on his label, it seems to work out pretty well with him handling the business side of stuff and me making the music.

What's coming up for Nine Lives - new releases over the next few months?

I had a gig in Olso back in July which was pretty cool, always nice to go and play in another country. I don't actively seek gigs in the UK, which may seem a bit strange, but I'm happy now just making music and putting it out there. Don't get me wrong, if I get offered a gig, it's likely I would take it, within reason! But I've done a lot of DJing over the last 15 years so am happy focusing mainly on production for now.

As far as releases go, I am working on a track which I hope will be out in November some time, and it looks like I might be getting one of my tracks on a compilation for a big name in the near future, but will have to keep that under wraps for now!

Introducing... DOGREEN!!

We've said it before and we will say again, Brazil is coming out with loads of great new and young artists that are fusing their love of electronic music and hip hop to make what many are saying is a new re-incarnation of Hip-House...

Thanks to huge artists such as Amine Edge & Dance, G-House is definitely here and these Brazilians are well and truely part of this new wave!

One of the artists that has made our ears stand up with his releases on a variety of labels (House of Hustler, Clap7, G-Mafia Records, + many more) is Dogreen, so we thought we would fire a few questions his way...

You are not the first Brazilian we have covered on our blog this year...  Why are Brazil producing so many DJs/artists who are into the g-house sound?  And who are your biggest musical influences?

Brazil's electronic scene is growing loads, yes, it gave rise to many projects like mine. We have quite a few artists into G-House. Our influence is not only in electronic music but music such as rap itself here in Brazil. Many of my biggest influences are from the same - Rap, Hip Hop: 2Pac, Eminem, Sabotage, Creole, Notorious Big...  but in the electronic scene one of the people who influenced me most was Gabe.

You have been working on a remix for East Project's Rough Cut boys...  Tell us how that came about?

Yes, I recently made a remix for them. I have even had great support on the track!! Honestly before this, I did not know about them until we were put together on a VA of my favorite Record Label - Clap7. We started talking on Facebook and so I was invited to do a remix, along with Diamn but it began to flow so much that I ended it quicker than I thought. It was a surprise.

How often to you get to DJ and where are the best places to go in Brazil right now?

The best so far for me were the Sunday Session (Braganca Paulista SP), COFF (Capivari SP) and Feeling (Medianeira PR). But the best for sure was in Southern Brazil at Paraná, Santa Catarina.  São Paulo is also very strong too.

Finale one...  If you were asked to play the last set, at the last ever party on earth, what record would you finish with?

The last would be "RUFUS - Desert Night (Remix Mortez)" hehe

Thank you!
